Alligator Training At Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo

Click on the image of the alligator to watch a great example of the use of training to facilitate overall health checks and desensitize animals to touch to reduce stress for medical care. As the curator points out both staff members and animals are better prepared for interactions in a non stressful way, having gradually progressed to them using small approximations and positive reinforcement. The animals are also empowered to leave which makes them less likely to choose to present aggressive behavior. And the training has lead to advances in AI techniques useful for crocodilian conservation.
