Compassion is more than empathy. It involves recognizing suffering and taking deliberate action to improve well-being. This presentation outlines four key components of a constructional and compassionate approach: (1) building desired behavior instead of attempting to eliminate undesired responses, (2) identifying and delivering critical consequences that produce meaningful outcomes for the animal, (3) utilizing nonlinear contingency analysis to fully understand the variables maintaining behavior, and (4) providing genuine choice by designing environments with more than one pathway to reinforcement.

Rather than relying on suppression, extinction, or arbitrary reinforcers, this approach respects the information animals offer through their behavior. By focusing on reinforcing what works for the animal, undesired behaviors naturally diminish, and desirable responses are sustainably strengthened. This process reduces distress, frustration, aggression, and fear, while promoting anticipation, participation, and agency.

Through real-life examples, this presentation illustrates how these concepts are practically applied across various species and settings, demonstrating how small changes in procedure can lead to meaningful and lasting outcomes.

By embedding compassion into the structure of our work, it becomes more than an ideal; it becomes the design for lasting, effective, and ethical behavior change.
