In this two hour virtual chat hosted by behavior analyst Dr Eddie Fernandez, Annette Pedersen (Animal Training Coordinator at the Copenhagen Zoo) and yours truly cover all sorts of ground. We discussed interesting ways we get action started so that we can select behavior to reinforce. (Annette shared a really fascinating story with pandas.) We also got into function based interventions, like the constructional approach which is opening up more options for force free trainers to address fear and aggressive responses. And we shared how language doesn’t have to be a barrier to spreading the word when it comes to behavior science and animal training. Plain language, video clips, and demonstrations can help make animal training accessible when teaching/consulting internationally. We also remind everyone to keep an eye out for articles from all of us in a special animal focused issue of Operants magazine from the B.F Skinner Foundation, guest edited by Dr Eddie Fernandez.
