Guests: Emily Ellison Primate Keeper Cameron Park Zoo and Laura Klutts Gorilla Keeper Cleveland Metroparks Zoo
Whether you work with great apes or not you have to listen to this episode! Here is why. This episode is all about making a difference. It is also a great reminder that everyone has the power to make changes that can have a tremendous impact on animal welfare. As you listen to this episode, I encourage you to think about the similarities to training a new behavior. It all starts with what you can do now and how you can build upon that beginning. My special guests Emily Ellison of Cameron Park Zoo and Laura Klutts of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo took the inspiration they experienced from a learning opportunity and helped grow this into an in-depth Great Ape Cardiac Workshop. If you are working with primates, you will be further inspired by the information that is being collected and shared at this event. We covered a lot of details in the podcast, including the dates for the next event. Visit the episode web page for links to the workshop and super inspiring video clips courtesy of Waco City Cable Channel.

Emily Ellison is a primate keeper at the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, Texas, where she works with lemurs, gibbons and orangutans. After graduating from Michigan State University, Emily did a Primate and Small Mammal internship at the Toledo Zoo, where she fell in love with working with primates, especially orangutans. Emily has been at the Cameron Park Zoo since 2012 and has helped establish the orangutan’s cardiac care program, along with assisting in the creation of the Great Ape Cardiac Health Workshop.
Laura Klutts is currently a Gorilla Keeper at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in Ohio. She has been a zookeeper for almost 16 years and has worked with a variety of species at different institutions across the US. After enhancing her primate knowledge and experience throughout her previous positions, Laura is happy to find herself back in her home state of Ohio, working with gorillas. Laura graduated from the University of Akron, earning a Bachelor's degree in Biology with a double specialization in Zoology and Animal Physiology. One of Laura's favorite aspects of working with great apes in managed care is husbandry voluntary training, especially when it comes to behaviors that can strengthen their cardiac care. She is always enthusiastic and excited to information share and benefit welfare of apes she directly works with as well as others in the species.
