This badge signifies the completion of the course Beyond the Recipe: Individualizing Animal Training.
A shaping plan may point you in the right direction—but the animal in front of you determines where you go next.
This course explores what it really means to individualize animal training while still benefiting from behavioral science, established procedures, and the experience of other trainers. We’ll look at the variables that make every training interaction unique, including species ethology, learning history, current behavioral repertoire, preferences, aversives, and the physical and social environment. From assessing before training to observing and adapting criteria, approximations, and reinforcement as behavior unfolds, you’ll see why individualization is an ongoing process rather than something that happens only when the plan is created. We’ll also explore how unexpected behavior can reveal valuable new pathways, how trainer fluency expands our repertoire for responding, and how established strategies can serve as useful hypotheses that are tested and adapted for each individual. Ultimately, effective training means using the science, learning from others, and allowing the animal’s behavior to inform what happens next.
This course includes access to an Individualization Checklist that offers a practical way to turn those observations into next steps.
